“Hawaii Hotels Charging for Amenities”
Blinded by Money
This story in today’s Honolulu Advertiser is just one more sign of businesses getting the pennies too close to their eyes. If you get them close enough you could be blinded to the opportunities in front of you.
The article quotes Starwood Hawaii’s spokeswoman Candice Kraughto as saying, “With a resort fee, hotel guests know the resort won’t nickel and dime you for special amenities, services or guest activities such Internet, shuttles, fitness center and parking…” I say it’s just the opposite. If they want to charge for these things, and are going to list them, they should be willing to deduct for those you do not use. I think the smarter way is to build whatever costs they want to charge into the room fee and then provide the amenites for “free”. Everyone likes free!

I agree that it should be built in to the price. Nothing ticks me off more that being charged for every little thing. Everything should be included. When we were at the Doubletree in NYC, they gave us free chocolate chip cookies, and use of the gym. However, now that I think about it, if the gym were free everywhere, then maybe it would be too crowded and I wouldn’t be able to get on the equipment.

I agree with you Ron… this should just be built into the room price, or otherwise they should deduct the things you don’t use.
If there is a mandatory resort fee to cover parking, use of the fitness center, Internet, etc… why should be not using those have to pay it?
