UPDATE:
I have been so moved by the comments on this post that I have moved the whole thing up so that it doesn’t get missed. Please read the comments and feel free to add your own. We absoultely must put a stop to this!

In case you missed my daily quote link about the damage that plastic bags do to our environment, you can see it by clicking right here.
If you already know, great, but are you doing something about it?
If not, it’s easy, just get a shopping bag like this one and use it. The environment is more fragile than you may know. We need to respect it or lose it. You can get your own green bag (and much more) at Down to Earth.
Mahalo for caring!

    GUILTY AS CHARGED!
After reading your “Shop Green” and talking with your wife I was made aware of how much power I have to make a change in this situation.
I felt so guilty yesterday when I went shopping and came home with 6 plastic bags. What was I thinking? I guess I wasn’t!
Today I am purchasing 4 more cloth bags which I will carry in my car. I did purchase a large insulated bag at COSTCO for $5+ and use that for any frozen or refrigerated items I purchase. This is incase I have more errands to run on the way home.
If each of us makes this one time investment in the cloth bags we will be helping our environment and the animals who live therein.
    I am committed!

Let’s keep this ball rolling. Plastic bags do indeed kill.

    Yes, plastic does kill:
Rarotonga, Cook Islands — A simple plastic shopping bag caused the death of the whale Temata.
In July the stranded beaked whale affectionately named Temata brought communities across Rarotonga together in a large-scale rescue operation to try and save the 20-year-old female.
Local whale researcher Nan Hauser has reported that Temata fell ill after she ingested a plain white shopping bag, which led Temata to seek out shallow water for comfort. A chain reaction in other organs in her body was the cause of her eventual collapse and death.
Temata, who had won the hearts of everyone on Rarotonga, was killed by human impact”.

While checking out at the grocery store today, with my three cloth bags, I exchanged “dirty looks” with the woman in front of me as she strolled away with six big plastic bags full of groceries.
This thing is becoming heated. I have begun to look at plastic bag users with the same disdain that I do smokers. I realize that it is just ignorance on their part, and that in time plastic bags will be outlawed, but I wonder how many helpless animals will fall prey to this human and inhumane stupidity in the meantime.

I took your advice and went to FOODLAND to purchase their cloth bags and did buy 6 of them.
This morning I ran into Office Depot to pick up some office supplies, and forgot
my bags in the car. I then asked the salesclerk if I could put all my purchases in my handbag which was a tote. She said absolutely and gave me a big smile. She said, “You are trying to save the earth.” I thanked her for her awareness and left. Perhaps other stores such as these could take a tip from the grocery chains.
    Heads up: Macy’s, Footlocker, etc,etc,etc.!!!
