Ron, this is a universal problem. Smoking in outside cafe's or exit and entrance areas is driving people nuts all over the country. My sister tells me in Europe, it is even worse. And, there is also a problem with a smell of something else they do anywhere outside over there. Perhaps a designated smoking room like they have at airports would be good. Smokeless ashtrays provided, proper ventilation or equipment to suck the smell out. People are not going to stop poisoning themselves just because we want them to. So perhaps they have to be put in a designated area.

Ron Here:
While I enjoy a "spirited debate," I want to butt in here with a reminder that this post is about the rules at Ala Moana Shopping Center not being followed. It's apparent that "Reality Check" likes to smoke, and probably will until he cannot inhale any longer, what I want is to see the security team at Ala Moana enforcing the law. Once they start handing out $100 fines, people (including "Reality Check") will find somewhere else to smoke.
I think in some cases, like the Asian tourists, it's just ignorance of the law. I asked two young (smoking) Japanese girls recently if they knew there was a $100 fine. They didn't, and butted their smoke really fast. What bothered me was that they were casually sitting at a Honolulu Coffee Company table, and "security" walked right past them. That's my gripe. I think they (the mall) are concerned more about keeping shoppers happy than enforcing this law; and forget the parking lot, you need a gas mask to get through there.

You DON'T want to I walk over to me and ask, “Could you please smoke somewhere else?” I' afraid that I would do more than "mutter" something and walk away.
It sounds like you need to eat inside where smoking is not allowed.

Have you ever thought about why we smoke? When we are stressed, angry or hurt with whatever blow life has dealt us, many of us reach for a coping mechanism. Some are healthy, some are not. My dearest friend who had quit smoking for four years, picked up the habit again when she was depressed because her brother died and they had a falling out before that. She wanted to die too and wanted to smoke to hurt herself. Can you believe it? Drinks now too. Looks ten years older, and I feel like I am losing my friend.

We all have stress, hurts, traumas. grief, loss, and problems, these are part of life in this system of things. The important thing is how we deal with them. When I am blue, I choose to use a healthy coping mechanism, and for me it is music, art, movies, books, TV, exercise, talking, and prayer, and lots of healthy foods and supplements to support brain function and calming happy chemistry like omega 3 fatty acids. Whatever mistakes we make in life, I have learned, it doesn't do us any good to hurt ourselves further, but to learn the lesson and grow from it. We are so easy to forgive others, we beat ourselves up and then subconsciously tell ourselves we are no good and don't deserve to take care of ourselves and then use various destructive behaviors to numb the pain.

Sometimes I think it is better to wallow in that pain until we are sick of it and then move on. We are not going to feel better if we smoke, eat or drink too much, take drugs or whatever excessive behavior we use to distract ourselves from our frustration, anxiety, hurt or anger. We all want to just scream sometimes. Well scream into a pillow until you are spent and then take the advice we would give to someone else in our situation. No one is perfect, move on.

You are entitled to your opinion, as I am entitled to mine. Smoking in your car or home or away from a human or animal is certainly your right and your business. Remember that cigarettes are a nicotine delivery system, the levels are manipulated, and it fits all the criteria for an addictive drug. Nicotine crosses the blood brain barrier and gives pleasure to the part of the brain that is responsible for that feeling of well being. It causes cravings as the nicotine is leaving the body. Cigarette companies know this.

Cigarette companies are like vampires feeding off the life blood of its customers. They don't care about you or your health, just your money. Smokers are being used, duped into making drug/cigarette companies rich. You certainly have the right to hand over your health and money to a "pusher". You can be addicted, manipulated, and used all you want. The studies show that smoking destroys 85% of the health and lives of those addicted. As one human to another, I want something better for people than that.

The best way to quit is to smoke a little less each time. Nicotine is craved in the amount it is ingested. Take in a little less until you are down to one drag, then that is all you will crave. Don't give in and you will detoxify shortly thereafter. Everyone has some kind of sickness, some of us have diseases beyond our control. Smoking is voluntary and is a waste of the gift of health. Some of us wish we were healthy enough to throw it away on the pleasure of being addicted to something. Best wishes on a happy and healthy life is what we all want for each other. Some people spend small fortunes taking care of themselves, other throw it away with both hands. My neighbor growing up now has emphezema, so many I know who smoked are spending their later years sick. It could have been avoided. Such is life. Most people wish they had never started smoking in the first place.

I agree with Reality Check. I can just leave. But I can also claim my ground and see where that gets me.

This morning I was reading the newspaper at an outdoor table at Ward Center. A young man nearby started smoking. The smoke went straight into my nose. I walked over to him and asked, "Could you please smoke somewhere else?" He muttered a combination of "Screw you" and "Uh" and went away. A few minutes later he returned to tell me that "People smoke here all the time." I said, "Thanks for preparing me for future conversations I shall have."

Five minutes later, another smoker arrived. I gestured to him that his smoke was bothering me. He smiled, gestured an apology, and left to smoke elsewhere.

Thanks for the lecture on "my rights". Here's one on yours:
If you are ever around me and I am smoking, have bad breath, BO, or have just passed gas, you have the right to just "run away".

You have the right to kill yourself, but not others. Your immune system may protect you, but other people may not be as strong and the smoke triggers asthma attacks, allergies, and is carcinogenic. My Aunt never smoked but became sick because my Uncle did. Smokers destroy cells in the heart that never grow back, and the same thing happens to people who inhale second hand smoke. This is the problem, not just the lungs but it damages the heart. Smokers have a 50% greater risk of bladder and prostrate cancer, as well as many other cancers. You may have a death wish, but it is not fair to impose it on others. You have the right to slowly poison yourself, but a strong person would quit and live life to the fullest, pursuing selfless not selfish pleasures. Why not get addicted to volunteering or something else useful to society? You will be glad you did.

As a long time smoker I am personally offended by the ever tightening rules telling me where I can and cannot smoke. This is a free country and I have the right to smoke anywhere I choose to.
I am being made to feel like a second rate citizen confined to certain areas just to take a smoke break; ridiculous!!!
