I have been vegetarian for 17 yrs and counting. I have found the following advice priceless to make sure i am getting what my body needs- omega 3 aka DHA, you cant get enough generally. it is made from marine algae oil, the product i use is called omega zen. flax oil etc does not convert efficiently enough so it is good to supplement with DHA, and its mercury free and no fish are killed to make it. The next is vitamin D, google it and you will find it is the most significant nutrient re-discovered. everyone needs to make sure they get enough, its anti cancer action discovery has rocked the health world. I wish more would adopt this diet, the thing is that the blood in meat is what addicts peoples tongues, but it is always possible to change if you can really see the reality of torture and murder. if you change just for health or environmental reasons, you probably will not last at it long. just a little easy tid bit to share.

This is such a great article other than the stupid comment by "Reality Check." Unfortunately people smarter than Reality Check have not wised up to their eating abuses. Killing animals is just not a nice thing to do. There may have been a day in our history when it was a matter of survival, but Neanderthals like Reality Check still do exist in our society. Just look at Sarah Palin.
Anyone with a brain and feelings (not Reality Check) can, and eventually will stop eating meat. The reasons go far beyond the animal killing. If you eat meat, you probably have about three days of dead flesh slowly working its way through your intestines leaving behind a trail of carcinogens and cholesterol that will slowly kill you. How many reasons do you need?

Eating vegan is not only great for your health, but it is the most environmentally friendly way to live!

"A groundbreaking 2006 United Nations report found that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. Luckily, we can help fix this problem by changing our diet. According to a 2006 study done by researchers at the University of Chicago, most Americans can reduce more greenhouse gas emissions by becoming a vegan than they can by switching to a hybrid electric car. They found that eating a vegan diet prevents the equivalent of 1.5 tons of CO2 emissions every year, more than the 1 ton of CO2 emissions prevented by switching from a typical large sedan to a Toyota Prius."

Check out this recent article that explains the EPA's proposed 'Cow Tax': http://www.businessandmedia.org/articles/2008/20081230165231.aspx

Did you know that it takes an extreme amount of resources to raise livestock?? I found these shocking statistics:

Amount of U.S. grain fed to farm animals: 70%
Pounds of corn and soy required to produce just one pound of pork: nearly 7
Water needed to produce a pound of wheat: 14 gallons
Water needed to produce a pound of meat: 441 gallons
Of all water used for all purposes in the United States, more than half goes to: livestock production

I read a statistic - in the Wall Street Journal about a year ago (see article here: http://www.mindfully.org/Water/2008/Burger-Water-Studies11jan08.htm) - that said it takes about 1,300 gallons of water to produce one cheeseburger!! There is a world water crisis and one in six people on the planet lack access to five gallons of clean water a day. Stop and think about that for a minute. Water is a finite resource, one that is being wasted and polluted by unregulated runoff from factory farms.

After reading John Robbins' The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World, I knew that I couldn't eat meat ever again. I am the least likely advocate of a vegetarian or even a vegan lifestyle, considering my livelihood depends on Americans eating meat, but the change to my energy, health and spirit since eschewing animal products is so dramatic. I am probably high on wheat grass, blue green algae, and vitamins while writing this - but I sure feel good!

My intention in posting this information is not to preach about the benefits of being vegan, it is to make you think the next time you eat. I realize that not everyone can commit to being vegetarian or vegan, but you can try to do be responsible buy limiting the amount of animal products you eat and by purchasing cruelty-free, and hormone-free animal products. Every single thing you put in your mouth affects your health and the health of our planet!

C'Mon Ron, get off of that high horse you are on and accept reality. I think I have told you this before, but you still don't seem to get it. God put the animals on this earth for us to enjoy in any way we want to, including eating them. You and your fellow vegimatic friends are all too hyped up on wheat grass or something.
