Promotions and Deals

CNNMoney quotes the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) as saying that this year’s holiday sales will be “the softest levels seen since 2004″. Their prediction is that “retailers will be relying on promotions and other deals” will be the way most retailers will deal with the softening trend.

While these marketing efforts might bring more customers into the store, my suggestion would be a stronger focus on selling to those in the store.

It’s amazing to see the lack of attention that shoppers get these days, and the biggest violators seem to be the biggest stores. My father told me that “volume can make up for a multitude of sins”.

While that is probably true, why not capitalize on what is in front of you with better service?

Absolutely true! I mostly shop in stores that will provide me with good service, and then I spend a bundle there. Not everyone is a do it your self type person. If the service is great, it keeps me coming back.

We have an employee who at one time worked on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Providing over the top good service was tantamount! She is our number one salesperson here, and blows away with first place as salesperson of the year every year. She really does everything it takes to engulf the customer in respectful, out of her way service, and people buy, buy, buy. It is amazing. She will walk out from around the counter to put a necklace on someone, and other such niceties. Go for it!

Big sales and promotions can often be overwhelming. Especially in bigger stores, I find myself having a hard time making decisions about what to buy. If I have a great salesperson assisting me, it is less likely that I will leave the store empty handed because I couldn’t make up my mind. Additionally, when I am purchasing a few items that are promotional items or on sale, I feel better about buying full price or more expensive items. Just a thought. :-)

Having sales people that are helpful, informed, and not pushy can really make a difference. There are a few stores, that no matter their sales, I will not go to again because of terrible service.
